How My Body Talks
Eyes
Eye contact is one of the most powerful of all body language skills. Looking a person in the eye shows you are interested in what they have to say.
Face
Your face is like a billboard. It lets everyone around you know if you are happy, sad, excited, frustrated, or angry.
Posture and Movement
Your body is like a movie without sound. Your mood can be interpreted just by watching you. Ways to make a good impression and show your interest in your customers are:
- Stand (or sit) straight
- Face the customer
- Nod
- Lean slightly forward
Hands
Gesturing with your hands (even when talking on the phone) is a natural way to express feelings and to help explain what you are talking about.
Touching
The most acceptable form of touching in a business setting is a handshake.
Physical Distance
Be aware of customers and their “comfort zones.” There are three Personal Space Zones:
- Intimate (0-2 feet)
- Personal (2-4 feet)
- Social (6 feet or more) *
*Social distancing, also called physical distancing between people reduce the number of times people come into close contact with each other.
Neatness
Your personal grooming/neatness and the appearance of your workspace reflects how you feel about yourself, your job, and your customer.
